The economic and social problems facing Turkey are deepening
Turkey's Kayseri MP Mahmut Arıkan announced that the economic and social problems facing Turkey are getting deeper and deeper.
What happens in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) is as important as the decisions that directly affect the daily lives of citizens, as well as the process by which these decisions are made. Kayseri MP Mahmut Arıkan harshly criticized what is happening in the parliament and especially the fate of the agenda proposals submitted by the opposition. Here are the details:
Turkey’s Education and Economic Reality
According to MP Arıkan’s speech, the economic and social problems facing Turkey are deepening. In particular, the appointment of 20,000 teachers two days ago left many disappointed. This is only a reflection of the problems in education.
Inflation has reached 70%, seriously affecting people’s purchasing power, while daily media reports of murders, betrayals and insults are increasing social unrest. Arıkan emphasizes that this is not only an economic crisis, but also a deep social crisis.
Proposals Rejected in Parliament
Stating that 204 group proposals were submitted by the opposition in the Second Legislative Year that started on October 1, 2023, Arıkan said that many issues ranging from education to unemployment, from pension issues to irregular migration problems were addressed in these proposals. Unfortunately, all of these proposals were rejected by the ruling party. Arıkan says that this shows that the parliament is insensitive to the problems and that the voice of the opposition is constantly suppressed.
International Agreements and the Role of Parliament
The MP stated that most of the parliament’s time is spent evaluating international agreements. Arıkan said that especially the agreements concluded in 2018, 2021 and 2022 occupy the parliamentary agenda today, emphasizing that most of these agreements do not offer solutions to current problems. For example, he stated that the “Cooperation in Law Enforcement Training” and “Mutual Recognition of National Driver’s Licenses” agreements with Palestine are insufficient in the face of today’s social and economic problems.
Proposing Solutions and Seeking Goodwill
Arıkan says that solutions need to be put on the agenda and that goodwill is essential for this. He says that the fact that the parliament is forced to resolve international agreements before addressing issues such as unemployment and corruption is a distraction from the parliament’s main duties.
This speech by Kayseri MP Mahmut Arıkan offers an important perspective on the functioning of the Parliament and the problems facing Turkey. Arıkan emphasizes that the parliament should focus on the real problems of the people and produce more effective solutions, and reminds us that all parties should take responsibility in this process.
