EU Representative Borrell: Two-State Solution Essential to Stop Gaza Tragedy
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell emphasized the EU's commitment to a two-state solution to stop the tragedy in Gaza. Borrell described the situation in Gaza as “terrible”.
Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, expressed his views on Gaza in a speech at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University in the US. Borrell emphasized the urgent need to start a political process to strengthen the Palestinian Authority and said: “We must say loudly and clearly that the only way out of this tragedy is to reach a two-state solution. I see no other way, no matter how difficult, to stop this tragedy, which will remain a stain on the human conscience.”
Europe’s Divide on Palestine
Borrell said that Europe is seriously divided on its position on Palestine. While European countries are united against Russia, he said, they are united in supporting Ukraine politically and economically, but they are deeply divided on Gaza.
Stating that the EU is taking responsibility to make a two-state solution possible, Borrell said that contacts with Arab partners are continuing. He also said that he observed a fatigue on the US side on this issue and criticized, “I see a certain fatigue on the US side in terms of continuing the search for a solution.”
The Situation in Gaza: “Terrible and Worrisome”
Stating that the situation in Gaza is extremely worrying, Borrell said: “I was in Gaza in 2008-2009 and I think this is the third or fourth time that Gaza is being destroyed. But this time it is being destroyed to the roots, completely flattened. People are dying, starving and suffering in unimaginable ways.”
Inadequate Humanitarian Aid
Stating that the humanitarian aid provided to Gaza is not enough, Borrell said: “You can look at the border by satellite, as I do every morning. You can see hundreds of thousands of people on the other side of the border, hundreds of thousands of people at the highest level of hunger according to the United Nations, and you can see more than a thousand trucks waiting, queuing to enter.”
These points made by Josep Borrell in his speech show that the international community needs to do more to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the Palestinian conflict. Emphasizing the two-state solution is considered as a critical step both to end the tragedy in the region and to achieve lasting peace.
