New Digital Nomad Visa Era Begins in Italy
Adopting the remote working model after the pandemic, Italy is launching a new one-year visa for digital nomads. This visa offers great opportunities for freelancers and remote company employees.
With the pandemic, changes in the work culture around the world have led many countries to reshape their visa policies. New visa categories have come into play, especially for professionals who are defined as “digital nomads” and prefer to work by living in different countries. Italy stands out as one of the leading countries in this regard.
Digital Nomad Visa: Who Can Benefit?
With the digital nomad visa launched in March 2022, Italy targets freelancers or company employees from non-European Union (EU) countries who have the opportunity to work remotely. The visa allows applicants to live in Italy for one year. The visa is renewable and can also be extended to family members.
What are the Application Requirements?
There are some conditions that applicants for the digital nomad visa must fulfill:
- Income Requirement: The applicant must have an income three times the minimum wage (approximately 30,400 dollars or 28,000 euros).
- Health Insurance: Have valid health insurance for the duration of the stay.
- Proof of Accommodation: Documents proving accommodation in Italy.
- Remote Work Experience: Documentation of previous remote working experience or time spent as a digital nomad for at least six months.
In addition, criminal record is questioned during the visa application and the applications of those who have been convicted of any crime within the last five years may be rejected.
Application Process and Required Documents
Applications for Italy’s digital nomad visa are now being accepted as of April 4. Applications must be submitted in person at the Italian consulate in the applicant’s country of residence. The documents required for the application are
- Valid passport
- Employment and income documents verifying remote work

Once the visa is approved, a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) must also be applied for within eight days of arrival in Italy.
Benefits and Opportunities
This visa is a great opportunity for professionals who have adopted the culture of working from home and are open to different cultures, especially during the pandemic. It opens an ideal door for digital nomads who want to live and work in Italy and explore the country’s rich cultural heritage. At the same time, this visa program allows Italy to become more competitive in the global labor market.
Digital nomadism is increasingly becoming an accepted model for modern working life. The steps taken by countries like Italy in this direction have the potential to improve the quality of life of individuals and play an important role in dynamizing the global economy. For this reason, Italy’s new digital nomad visa offers important clues as to how work patterns will evolve in the future.
