Israel and Ukraine: International Support and Strategic Needs Implied by Differences in Air Defense Systems

This article contrasts the contrast in international support and technology behind Israel's effective defense against an Iranian attack with Ukraine's lack of similar support vis-à-vis Russia. It discusses the two countries' air defense capabilities, international politics and future prospects.

The massive Iranian attack on Israel in the middle of the night has once again demonstrated the critical importance of modern air defense systems on the battlefield. Thanks to its advanced defense network, Israel was able to neutralize Iranian missiles and drones before they reached its territory, a major threat. This was made possible by the coordinated support of the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Jordan.

Ukraine: Vulnerability and Lack of Support

When I arrived in Kiev the next day, the contrast between Israel and Ukraine became even more stark. Ukraine, unlike Israel, does not have adequate air defense systems. Western support for Ukraine is often insufficient. Ukraine is isolated under constant Russian aggression. Every day, Russian missiles and drones target Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. This is severely limiting Ukraine’s capacity to resist and causing widespread humanitarian crises.

Threats to Critical Infrastructure

In particular, the recent missile attack on a power generation plant in the north will make life even more difficult for millions of people as winter approaches. Russia’s aim is to make Ukrainian cities it cannot occupy uninhabitable.

The West’s Belated Awakening

Ukraine’s defense needs are great, but the West’s response has been slow and timid. The $61 billion military aid package approved by the US House of Representatives shows how crucial this support is, but there have been instances where it has been insufficient. The West has been slow to acknowledge the potential for protracted war and the serious military assistance required.

Europe’s Defense Paradox

Europe’s capacity in the field of air defense systems contrasts with the general shortage of artillery and ammunition. The provision of only seven Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine is insufficient to respond to the requirements of a large-scale war. Apart from Germany’s contribution, the inconsistent policies of other European countries and their adherence to NATO standards are questionable.

Conclusion Looking to the Future

Western support for Ukraine is entering a critical phase, especially in the field of air defense technology. The arms stockpiles and military strategies of Europe and the US will be decisive for Ukraine’s future security. Observing the city’s resilience and struggle for survival during the days I spent in Kiev reveals that the Western response to this crisis has not only a military but also a moral dimension. Recognizing Ukraine as part of “us” is a necessity for Europe to safeguard its own security and values.

This contrast highlights the contradictions in the West’s global strategies and the need to reassess its priorities. Ukraine’s security is central not only to Ukraine’s future, but to the future of Europe as a whole.
